Staying One Step Ahead Of the Crowd

Vintage purveyors such as myself have tremendous influence on current design trends. Personally speaking my design research department in my boutiques can boast design clients such as Donatella Versace, Mark Jacobs, John Galliano, Rick Owens, Michael Kors, Betsey Johnson, and Jill Stuart, just to name a few. Vintage dealers such as myself take pride in the fact that we unearth incredible vintage garments, and accessories with unique design elements and present them discriminately and discreetly to our selected design clients from around the globe. My boutique in Beverly Hills, The Paper Bag Princess has a separate locked room which houses my couture pieces along with my design inspiration collections which are tendered up only to those design clients who seasonally make the pilgrimage out to Los Angeles with the sole purpose of sourcing new design inspiration. Design inspiration along with celebrity dressing is one of the largest driving forces behind the vintage industry. It virtually becomes a question of what came first, “The Chicken or The Egg”, or “ The Original Designs that one could buy from a vintage boutique, or the newly inspired designs by the world’s contemporary designers which might be found in your local designer boutiques or department store”. So I would encourage vintage enthusiast to not only shop vintage, but also read current fashion magazines, see what trends are happening, hit the vintage boutiques and see if they can be one step ahead and start their own trend with a new vintage inspiration of their own, snap up those incredible pieces before the design clients get their hands on them, and then their new designs hit the contemporary boutiques at ten times the price!!! That is the mission of a savvy vintage shopper…..always one giant step ahead of the designers.

This year, the event was held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the home of the Canadian consul in Los Angeles. Press and paparazzi swarmed the area outside as they eagerly awaited the arrival of actor Kiefer Sutherland, who is this year’s recipient for the organization’s Award of Excellence.
